Reconstructing the life and dinnseanchas of local communities in the past fulfils a real need in people who identify with or belong to that locality. Though long regarded primarily as the territory of the antiquarian and the leisured scholar, local history is moving in from the margins of university teaching and scholarship and there is a growing awareness that its practice can benefit from the broader paradigms and the research methods used in history and the human sciences.
Objectives
The aim of the course is to systematically and coherently develop a range of historical research skills and thereby, further the historical understanding of local and regional communities and societies.
Contents
Year 1
Foundation course: scope, sources and methods in local history; Reading the landscape: sources and methods in historical geography; Sources and cases in modern Irish society, Local studies, archaeology and material culture; The excluded voice? Methods and cases in oral history and bealoideas, Computing, databases and quantitative research in local history;
Summer, Dissertation.

Applications should possess a primary degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. history, archaeology, geography, Irish studies) with at least second class honours (Primary Degree: Level 8 NQAI). Applicants with approved equivalent qualifications, who have substantial experience in historical research or relevant professional experience may also be considered for admission.
ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS
As all international students are required to possess sufficient language skills to attend lectures and sit examinations at the University of Limerick, students should be competent to communicate through the medium of English prior to their arrival.
Students must have a minimum score of 550 (paper based) or 213(computer based) 80 (internet based) in TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or an IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score in the range of 6.5-7 and not less than 6.0 in any one component.
