This one-year, full-time MA in Politics is a new programme offered by the College of Humanities. At the end of the programme, students will have a solid understanding of the study of contemporary political issues and systems. They are introduced to the key conceptual and practical problems in studying politics, whether studying the behaviour of international organisations, states, parties, new social movements, or voters.
The programme is designed to attract able and ambitious candidates with an upper second class degree or better in a suitable discipline and with an interest in understanding contemporary societies at sub-national, national and international levels.
Objectives
* To provide a comprehensive and in-depth perspective on contemporary political systems and issues
* To provide students with the possibility to engage in a significant piece research of their own choosing
* To provide students with the methodological skills to pursue professional careers or further postgraduate research
The course is designed for those who want to pursue a professional career in the private of public sectors as well as for those who want to pursue further postgraduate study.
Students are required to take three core modules and four optional modules in a combination of lectures and seminar discussion. An additional and substantial research element includes: Assessed course research papers; and a dissertation of 10,000-15,000 words written on a topic of choice under the guidance of an appropriate supervisor. A minimum pass (C3) in the dissertation is a requirement for the successful examination of this programme.

During the Christmas Break a study trip to a European Capital is offered.
Semester 2
* Comparative Politics
Students must choose two modules among the following:
Modules without prerequisites:
Issues in Contemporary Democratic Theory; Russian and Post-Soviet Politics Issues in International Development
Modules with prerequisites :
Issues in International Public Policy; International Security; Feminist Perspectives on Conflict and Development Issues; External Relations of the European Union; Political Reconciliation in the Aftermath of Conflict; Partnership and Governance.
Summer Semester
Dissertation
All elective modules may not be offered if student numbers are too small or if there are irresolvable timetable clashes.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take testPrimary degree in a relevant discipline with First or Upper Second Class Honours or an approved equivalent qualification. Candidates must be proficient in English.
ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS
As all international students are required to possess sufficient language skills to attend lectures and sit examinations at the University of Limerick, students should be competent to communicate through the medium of English prior to their arrival.
Students must have a minimum score of 550 (paper based) or 213(computer based) 80 (internet based) in TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or an IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score in the range of 6.5-7 and not less than 6.0 in any one component.
