The Safety Health and Welfare at Work Act 1989 legislated for the establishment of the Health and Safety Authority. The Act requires every employer to ensure the safety, health and welfare of employees regarding the design of the place of work, design of plant and machinery, provision of safe systems of work, control or elimination of hazards, and the services of a "competent person". The course content has been designed to satisfy the knowledge requirements specified in the HETPEP (Harmonising European Training Programmes for Ergonomics Professionals) document.
Objectives
* Professional Competence is to be obtained in: Safety area: anatomy and physiology, workplace hazards, human-machine systems, safety analysis and assurance, and occupational hygiene.
* Ergonomics: human reliability, human performance, workplace design, work psychology.
* Techniques: instrumentation, statistics and design of experiments, work analysis.

The graduates of this programme are expected to play a prominent part in enhancing the safety, health and welfare of workers in Europe. As a result there will be a net financial gain for the employers and better working conditions for the employees.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Graduate Diploma:
A science degree, including a nursing or a psychology degree (Level 8 - National Qualifications Authority of Ireland).
Masters degree:
A good honours degree in the above. Students who attain a 2.1 Honours standard may apply for transfer to the Masters programme and complete a Thesis and Conference Paper.
ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS
As all international students are required to possess sufficient language skills to attend lectures and sit examinations at the University of Limerick, students should be competent to communicate through the medium of English prior to their arrival. Students must have a minimum score of 550 (paper based) or 213(computer based) 80 (internet based) in TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or an IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score in the range of 6.5-7 and not less than 6.0 in any one component.
