The analysis of economies, in terms of past performance, current situation and future prospects, is not only a major business in itself but has an enormous impact on political, business and social life and on public thinking in general.
This programme develops the knowledge, understanding and skills required for those interested in opening up a career in this exciting area at home and abroad, where theoretical and empirical research combines with communication, advising and decision-making. Career opportunities include professional economists in business and government, in research and consultancy organizations and in third level institutions.
The programme ensures through its content, approach and standards that you enhance your university education, while emphasising the link between your studies and practice. It can also provide the foundations for undertaking further postgraduate studies, including PhD programmes in Ireland and internationally.
Participants will acquire the theoretical tools and practical skills to analyse economies at the microeconomic and macroeconomic levels, and from a range of perspectives which apply in practice. You will learn to use theory to measure an economy in terms of its growth and prosperity, and to analyse the causes of prosperity in global economies, including entrepreneurship and innovation, education and training, competitive industry, creative and efficient cities and supportive government. You will acquire the techniques for analysing economic data and conducting research in order to undertake independent research and write research reports on topical issues.
