The M.Ed. degree is a modularised programme and can be attained through a credit accumulation process. Its focus is on the continuing professional development of teachers at all levels of education. Students can design their own special programme from the available modules to suit their own professional specialisation, research areas and personal interests. However, students should note that a minimum and maximum quota of students will be applied to each module and that the M.Ed. is currently being revised, which will likely result in a reduction in the range and choices of modules on offer over the next few years.
In 2011, selection will be based on teaching qualification, academic record, professional experience and the online supplementary Cadidates Statement submitted to PAC.
CKE59 – MEd Modular (120 credit route)
Applicants meeting the initial entry requirements should apply through 120 credit route CKE59
CKE67 – MEd Modular (60 credit route)
Applicants meeting the initial entry requirements and who have an approved postgraduate diploma (see below) or equivalent (with an honours grade) should apply through the 60 credit route CKE67. Equivalencies are subject to Department and College approval.
The programme can be studied in a flexible timescale within a 5 year period. A total of 120 credits, or 60 credits in the case of a holder of one of the approved diplomas, must be completed. Students are limited to studying a maximum of 30 credits in any one teaching period (i.e. max 60 credits in any one year). Most 60 credit students choose to accumulate their credits over 1-2 years, while 120 credit students normally accumulate their required credits over 2-3 years of study.
Entrants to CKE 59 – MEd Modular (120 credit route) will be required to take 2 x 15 credit compulsory taught modules (subject to faculty/college approval) as follows:
* ED 6048** Perspectives on Learning, Curriculum and Assessment (to be timetabled in 2011/12)
* ED 6046 Contemporary Issues in Education (to be timetabled in 2012/13)
as well as their choice of 4 taught modules from the available list and the compulsory dissertation module (ED 6035) as outlined below
Entrants to CKE 67 – MEd Modular (60 credit route) will be required to take two taught modules of their choice and to complete the compulsory dissertation module based on their area of specialisation on entry (the general area for which they were allowed 60 credits)
(The Department reserves the right to withdraw/change a module in special circumstances).
