This programme aims to provide students with specialist knowledge in the widest range of writing in English from the Middle Ages (Old English and/or Middle English) to the Renaissance.
Students choose two of the following options in the taught 20-credit course, before proceeding to their dissertation:
* Option A - Soldiers, Scholars and Saints - Old English Language and Literature to 1100
* Option B - Literature in the Age of Chaucer: Middle English Literature and its contexts 1100-1500
* Option C - Literature in the Renaissance: Reform and Revolution
While allowing students the opportunity to specialise in any two of the three traditions, which comprise this wider area (i.e. Old, or Middle, or Renaissance English), the course also aims to achieve significant dialogues between all three traditions and also the wider interdisciplinary contexts of earlier literary production - Latin and vernacular European literatures, art, history, and music.
The overall course is designed to allow graduates to explore, across time , theories of authorship and translation; the cultures of manuscripts and printing; the insular contexts of medieval and renaissance languages, literatures and ideas; and the literary implications of religious, cultural and social transformation.
