Programme Description

The Department of French will be interested to hear at any time from well-qualified graduates wishing to pursue postgraduate work in French. At present, we have postgraduate students working on a range of degrees and a number of these students are working on research degrees.

Various forms of funding are available for the support of research. Members of the Department carry out research in a wide range of areas of French as an academic discipline. The Department also encourages interdisciplinary projects.

The MA degree in French - Linguistics aims to provide you with the opportunity to develop an awareness and understanding of key concepts in various fields of linguistics and to focus on a range of research questions and research methods in linguistics.

You will have the opportunity to work on a range of specialized areas:

* key issues in the evolution of the French language
* sociolinguistic approaches to language variation and change in French and to issues of language and gender
* theory of second language acquisition
* language policy and planning and the international status of French

Contents

Course content

We plan to offer the following modules:

* FR5101: Approaches to linguistics
* FR5102: Language variation and change
* FR5103: Approaches to second language acquisition
* FR5104: Sociolinguistic approaches to language
* FR5106: The evolution of the French language: issues and milestones
* FR5199: Dissertation

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Entry Requirements

A standard of at least a second-class honours in the subject in the B.A. examination, or an equivalent qualification, will be expected.

English Language Requirements

All applicants whose first language is not English are required to sit either an IELTS or TOEFL test.

English Language Requirements for Postgraduate Degree Programmes:

* College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences: IELTS 7.0
* College of Business and Law: Business IELTS 6.5 and Law IELTS 6.5
* College of Science, Engineering and Food Science: IELTS 6
* College of Medicine and Health: IELTS 6.5
