The Masters in Ethnomusicology (CKE68) is a one-year full-time programme of study. The programme focuses on the development of critical skills in the realm of ethnomusicological theory and practice, including performance.
Please note that the first round closing date was July 1st. Late applications can be submitted after the original deadline of July 1st until August 1st. The School of Music will consider late applications made after the original deadline of 1st July only if places are still available on the programme. Learning OutcomesOn successful completion of this programme, students should be able to:
* Demonstrate improved knowledge and understanding of the history of ethnomusicological theory and methodology;
* Demonstrate an understanding of fieldwork theory and methodology and apply this knowledge in the course of ethnographic research and representation;
* Apply theories of performance in critical and creative to musical performance;
* Demonstrate improved skills in musical performance, improvisation and creativity across a range of music genres and repertories;
* Demonstrate the competence to carry out an independent research dissertation.
The degree consists of modules to the value of 90 credits, comprising four 15-credit taught modules and one 30-credit thesis/research project module. The modules are delivered by the School of Music staff in the form of seminars, tutorials and practical classes. Candidates are assessed largely on the evidence of written papers/submissions, practical exams, and a final research dissertation/project.
Students take 90 credits as follows:
Part I
* MU6001 History and Theory of Ethnomusicology (15 credits)
* MU6002 Ethnography of Music (15 credits)
* MU6003Performance Studies (15 credits)
* MU6004 Performance Practice (15 credits)
Part II
* MU6005 Research Dissertation (30 credits)
or
* MU6006 Research Project (30 credits)
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take testA candidate for the MA degree in Ethnomusicology must have obtained at least a Second Class Honours BA Degree, or equivalent, in Music or a cognate subject (e.g. Anthropology, Folklore, Cultural Studies). Applicants with an appropriate professional equivalent (e.g. professional musician of high standing, music media professionals, etc.) will also be considered. All applicants will be required to attend an interview with members of the programme team and may be required to pass a qualifying test.
