Programme Description

The MA in Composition is a full-time programme, running for one year from the date of first registration in late September. It is designed to allow students to develop their compositional skills through select historical, technical, aesthetic and practical studies. The term `composition´ in this instance is understood to mean any form of creative musical work, including notated or recorded pieces, improvisations, Sound Art, visual art with a sound component, Music Theatre, Performance Art, Installations, computer programmes intended for the realisation of musical concepts (such as works involving interactive electronics), and so on.

It will comprise studies in important techniques, repertoire, history and culture, analysis and music technology, and explores issues involved in taking a composition to performance; this represents a broad cross-section of skills useful to composers in many different stylistic areas.

It will broaden students' knowledge and understanding of many important trends in New Music; develop and deepen their comprehension of diverse compositional techniques; expand and improve their compositional language; assist them to achieve greater confidence in their compositional language; increase their ability to discuss and critique their own and others music; assist them to prepare for a PhD in Composition.

Entry Requirements

In order to be permitted to proceed to the MA in Composition, a candidate must hold an Honours Bachelor´s degree in Music, with a grade of 2H2 or higher, and demonstrate experience in the creation of music; candidates with an Honours degree in another subject, grade 2ii or higher, and a demonstrable experience of composing music may also be eligible.

Applicants with an appropriate professional equivalent (e.g. professional musician or other artist of high standing etc.) will also be considered. All applicants will be required to submit a portfolio of compositional work in whatever form is suitable (scores, recordings, videos, computer programmes etc.) and may also be required to attend an interview with members of the programme team. Final acceptance is subject to approval by the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences, UCC.

English Language Requirements

All applicants whose first language is not English are required to sit either an IELTS or TOEFL test.
