The MA in Music and Cultural History (CKE79) is a one-year full-time programme of study. Designed to introduce students to the history, theory and practice of musicology, the programme is both self-contained as a programme in its own right and also ideal as a preparation for candidates who have the ambition to progress subsequently to doctoral research in musicology.
An alternative to conventional postgraduate programmes in musicology, the MA in Music and Cultural History draws on the diverse expertise of four internationally renowned scholars to combine the very best of traditional and contemporary scholarly practice. Students are presented with the opportunity to acquire and develop core musicological skills, including research techniques and the critical editing of music. They are also introduced to some of the most exciting developments in recent music scholarship, including explorations of politics, gender and sexuality in music; the interaction of music with other media; and the new links being formed between musicology and other disciplines like film studies, cultural studies and philosophy.
Learning OutcomesOn successful completion of this programme, students should be able to:
* Identify key trends and developments in recent musicology;
* Apply a range of critical methodologies to notated and performed music;
* Identify salient features of musical texts and communicate their findings effectively;
* Reflect critically on the engagement between musicology and related disciplines;
* Demonstrate fluency with the skills required to carry out research at MA level.
