The International Master’s Degree Programme in Forest Sciences and Business(MScFB) aims to promote the sustainable use of forest resources and human well-being through education based on scientific research. The programme is designed for qualified students who want to gain the expertise of a sustainable forestry cluster and work in an innovative, cross-cultural environment.
The Programme is organised by the Departments of Forest Ecology, Forest Economics and Forest Resource Management. Four major subjects are offered: Forest Ecology, Forest Resource Science and Technology, Forest Economics, and Forest Products Marketing.
Within the specialised studies, you may choose between two options:
* Science-based specialised studies consisting of theoretical and methodological studies in your major subject; or
* Theme-based multidisciplinary specialised studies where two alternative modules are available: “Sustainable Forest Management” and “Global Industrial Forestry”.
The Master’s Degree Programme in Forest Sciences and Business will equip you with the professional skills necessary when working in the ever more challenging, ever more global forestry field at both national and international scales. In the wake of climate change and increased pressures to exploit forests, professionals who can guide the use of forest resources sustainably are of great value worldwide.
The University of Helsinki has a 100-year tradition in forest sciences. There are approximately 70 MSc graduates annually. Graduates of MScFB find employment opportunities across the globe in forestry (and natural resources) and in the forest industry – within governmental and non-governmental organisations as well as in scientific research.
The Master´s Degree Programme in Forest Sciences and Business (MScFB, 120 ECTS credits) consists of two major subjects (from August 1, 2011 onwards): Forest Ecology and Management, and Forest Economics and Marketing. The structure of the studies are as follows: general studies (16 ECTS credits), major subject studies (70-74 CTS), other studies (25 ECTS) and elective studies (5-9 ECTS).
Studying in MScFB is based on student's personal study plan. Major subject studies according to the selected study line and the thesis work form the core of the programme.
Within the specialized studies (other studies), students choose between either Science-based specialized studies consisting of theoretical and methodological studies, or Theme-based multidisciplinary studies. In science-based studies students strengthen their scientific aptitude in their study line, whereas in theme-based multidisciplinary studies students broaden their knowledge of ecological, economical, social and technical aspects of the forest sector. Students choose from four different themes: I) Environmental change, II) Multiple use of of forests and forest conservation, III) International forestry and forest policy, and IV) Bioenergy

Register Now!The Master’s Degree Programme in Forest Sciences and Business is open to applicants who have completed a suitable Bachelor's degree or an equivalent degree in Finland or abroad. Also eligible are applicants who will have completed a suitable Bachelor's degree or an equivalent degree, so that by the time they enrol at the University, they will be able to present their diploma.
Selection criteria
Student selection will primarily be based on previous study performance, the relevance of previously completed studies, the study plan and a motivation letter drafted by the applicant. In addition to good English skills, the applicants are required to have good performance level in their previously completed studies. Secondary consideration can be given to the applicant’s proficiency in other languages, professional experience relevant to the programme, applicant’s CV as well as letter of recommendation.
Special consideration will be given to the fact that the applicant’s previous studies must provide a solid foundation for studies in the programme. Admitted students may be required to complete a maximum of 15 credits worth of supplementary studies. These studies cannot be incorporated into the Master’s degree.
Language requirements
In accordance with Rector’s Decision No. 63/2010, applicants are required to have academic level proficiency in English in order to be able to successfully complete their studies.

Finnish Universities are accredited by the law. Universities are responsible for the quality and continuous development of their education and other operations.
