The Masters Degree in Biomedical Science is a part-time course aimed at Biomedical Science and Life Science graduates. It is particularly suitable for Medical Laboratory Scientists working in a clinical setting, but is equally relevant to individuals interested in any area of Medical Diagnostics – for example in the Biotech or Biopharmaceutical sectors. The course is designed to extend and integrate the student’s knowledge base and develop a critical understanding of recent scientific developments in relation to diagnostic laboratory pathology. It is a taught Masters degree incorporating a research project and dissertation. To facilitate participation by those in full current employment, the programme is offered on a part-time block-release basis over two academic years.

The programme provides an advanced education and training in biomedical sciences, emphasising the evolving areas of laboratory medicine and the associated clinical services. It is a discipline specific programme that allows specialisation in specific areas of Biomedical Science including Haematology, Medical Microbiology, Cellular Pathology, Clinical Chemistry, immunology and Transfusion Science. Specialization is achieved by selection of elective module that are offered in a range of specific areas. In addition students will also be educated and trained in research methodologies and will undertake an original research project into a specific biomedical problem.Research findings are presented in the form of a thesis.

The programme is jointly delivered by Cork Institute of Technology and University College Cork. The participating departments include Department of Biochemistry, UCC, Department of Microbiology, UCC, Department of Pathology, UCC, and the Department of Biological Sciences, CIT.There is also participation from the two hospital networks within the HSE southern area and university teaching hospitals normally associated with CIT/UCC. The course is accredited by the Academy of Medical Laboratory Science, the professional body for Medical Scientists in Ireland. It should be noted however, that completion of this course does not qualify one to work as a Medical Scientist.
