This course is designed not only to give participants thorough training in the theory, instrumentation and practice of a wide range of analytical techniques, but also to sharpen their skills and initiative in confronting and solving analytical problems such as arise in various areas of Irish industry.
The course also aims to introduce candidates to research and method development in analytical chemistry.
Towards these ends the course will comprise of:
* more than 120 lectures,
* laboratory work on set experiments
* an analytical research project.
Opportunities exist for industrial placement both locally and through IAESTE and for exchange of staff and students with other European research laboratories through various EU-supported Socrates Networks, linked to University College Cork.
Course Content
Lectures, chosen from the following topic areas, are provided in a dedicated lecture schedule and through attendance at appropriate modules.
* o Classical Methods and Spectroscopy
* o Electrochemical and Thermal Methods
* o Separation Techniques in Analytical Chemistry
* o Surface, X-ray, Radiochemical and Materials Analysis
* o Chemometrics and Computerisation
* o Miscellaneous Methods and Applications
Set experiments are selected from the topics listed above and will involve the whole analytical process from sampling to the assessment of results and reliability parameters Research project. Each candidate is required to complete a project based on individual research and development in a selected field of modern analytical chemistry, under the supervision of an analytical staff member.
Entry Requirements
The normal prerequisite for admission to the course is a First or Second Class BSc Honours degree with significant chemistry content, but consideration can be given to equivalent qualifications in related areas of science and technology. Candidates with proven and relevant industrial experience can be considered for places following interview and assessment by the Professor of Analytical Chemistry.
