To familiarise students with the cell and molecular biology of cancer cells to Masters/Diploma level; to provide training in the theoretical and practical analytical skills currently used in cancer research, and to give students direct experience of research during a research placement project with either a collaborating industrial partner or equivalent research laboratory. The course aims to prepare students for employment as scientists in industry, academia or a research institute either by direct entry or following further study.

Course modules The course comprises six modules. The first five modules include lectures, tutorials and a three-month taught laboratory course. The fifth module comprises a nine-month cancer research project carried out in a research laboratory either at Leicester University, at a UK Cancer Research Institute or in an industrial laboratory.

Teaching and assessment methods

Continuous assessment is a major element of the course. Students are assessed on their performance in both the formal laboratory course and in three course examinations. The laboratory research project constitutes 66% of the assessment for the course. There is also a viva voce examination at the end of the course.
