Helsinki University of Technology (TKK) in Finland invites students with a BSc degree in relevant area to join the International Master´s Programme in Forest Products Technology.
The study programme offered by the Department of Forest Products Technology at TKK is unique because it covers almost every aspect of converting wood as a raw material to a product, whether it is a printed glossy magazine or a cosy wooden interior with a parquette floor. Studying at the Department of Forest Products Technology is versatile.
The teachers are experts in the field within both the University and industry. Practice-oriented learning, including laboratory exercises and excursions to industrial sites, is emphasized along with theoretical education. With us you can get acquainted with different areas of using wood and wood technology from sawn wood and plywood to manufacturing of furniture. In the chemical forest products field, our activities cover the products and processes of both forest products chemistry and pulping and papermaking technology. The new addition to our curriculum are education in printing technology.
The International MSc Programme in Forest Products Technology includes the following special areas: Forest Products Chemistry, Chemical Pulping Technology, Paper and Printing Technology, Environmental Technology within Process Industry and Wood Technology. The selection of all the subject areas will be available in the year 2006. The department reserves the right to modify the content of the Programme.
MSc level studiesStudents accepted to the MSc Programme in Forest Products Technology will join Finnish degree students in the MSc level courses (Intermediate and Advanced level modules). They are required to have a BSc degree from a relevant subject area before applying. If this degree is directly comparable with the TKK's BSc degree for Finnish forest products students, then the student may join the MSc level courses right away. In other cases some supplementary studies may be required before starting the Master's courses.
The studies at TKK are constructed of even sized modules. For the foreign programme students the MSc degree consists of studies in the major subject (40 ECTS credits), the minor subject or other courses agreed in study plan (20-40 ECTS credits), methodological studies (10 ECTS credits) and the Master's Thesis (30 ECTS credits).
Forest Products ModulesThe Intermediate and Advanced level modules offered by the Department of Forest Produts Technology cover widely different aspects of wood and forest products technology. The students choose first from three choices: Wood Product Technology, Chemical Pulping Technology and Paper and Printing Technology (Intermediate module). After these the students can deepen their knowledge on several specialised Advanced modules.
The thesis is a supervised independent research project at an industrial or research institution. The department professors and research staff actively assist the students in finding a suitable thesis subject. At the Department of Forest Products Technology the thesis is usually done as a paid work placement project.
The language of instruction is English. The courses start at the beginning of September. The autumn term is from September to December and the spring term from January to May.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take testAll applicants are required to have a BSc degree in a subject area related to forest products technology. If the BSc degree does not cover the essential subjects, complementary studies at TKK may be required before attending the real MSc level courses. These individually selected courses will be listed to students in context with the admittance letter.
Language requirements
Since the courses are taught in English, the applicants should have a good command of English language. This should be proved with an official test report (TOEFL, IELTS or Cambridge). The TOEFL limits are 580 for the paper test and 237 for the computer test. In the new TOEFL iBT test, the limit is 92. The required IELTS score is 6 or higher and Cambridge (Proficiency or Advanced) grade "C" or higher.
Students who have passed their degree in English in the USA, Canada, Great Britain, Ireland, Australia or New Zealand are exempted from delivering the test report.
