Location of University of Leicester

To facilitate mature, reflective psychodynamic practice, leading to a nationally recognised professional counselling qualification. To demonstrate the skills and competencies of an advanced counselling practitioner, and be able to practise competently as a counsellor in a general counselling setting. To provide a working knowledge of presenting issues, appropriate assessment, referral and treatment.

Teaching and assessment methods

Modules are assessed by a mixture of essays, case studies and a classroom-based assignment. Personal development appraisal, case file and supervision report are also required.


IELTS

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Requirements

Entry Requirements * Degree in a relevant subject (Psychology, Sociology, Medicine, Social Studies), or an equivalent professional qualification.
* Minimum 50 hours of basic counselling training to be completed prior to commencement of the programme.
* Minimum age 23 years or over.
* Minimum two years´ relevant work experience.

In Year 1, students are encouraged to enhance their skills by seeking a placement with a relevant voluntary sector agency. Formal supervised clinical practice begins at the start of Year 2, and students may need to continue their placement after the taught course has been completed.

English Language Requirements

Applicants whose first language is not English, and who have not lived in a country where the first language is English for at least three years immediately before the start of their course, need to satisfy the University´s English language requirement.

* From students who take IELTS (the British Council´s International English Language Testing System), we look for an overall score of 6.0 or above for courses in Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering, Geography, Geology, Mathematics and Physics and Astronomy, and 6.5 or above for all other courses.
* From students who take TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), we look for 575/233/90* or above for courses in Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering, Geography, Geology, Mathematics and Physics and Astronomy, and 600/250/100* for all other courses. (*Scores for paper-based/computer-based/internet-based versions of TOEFL)

As well as the internationally-known IELTS and TOEFL tests, the University also accepts many other English language qualifications.
