Studies in the Master's Programme in Machine Learning and Data Mining (Macadamia) cover two important fields in modern computer science, machine learning and data mining. They allow computer systems to adapt and to learn by observing the environment either with the help of sensors or by browsing large-scale databases. These methods are applicable to and necessary for a wide variety of fields. Recent key application areas include bioinformatics, ecology, natural language processing, and multimodal interfaces.
Macadamia programme is organized by the Department of Information and Computer Science (ICS), known for its pioneering research and education in this field. The programme offers an excellent starting point for positions in research and development of the information technology field, both in Finland and abroad. In addition, pursuing doctoral studies is easy as the ICS department is partner in several Finnish graduate schools.
The Machine Learning and Data Mining curriculum (120 ECTS credits) consists of six modules:
* Intermediate Module in Computer and Information Science A2 (20 ECTS)
* Advanced Module in Computer and Information Science A3 (20 ECTS)
* Special Module in Computer and Information Science C (20 ECTS)
* Methodological studies (10 ECTS)
* Elective studies (20 ECTS)
* Master's thesis (30 ECTS)
See further information on the courses and suggested timetable for studies on the programme website.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

General admission requirements
The general admission requirements are the same for all programmes. See also language requirements (both links can be found in the link section).
Programme-specific requirements
Admission criteria to the programme is a high quality Bachelor’s degree (minimum 180 ECTS credits or equivalent) in computer science or software engineering. Excellent candidates with degrees in other areas such as information systems, engineering, natural sciences, mathematics, economics, or industrial arts will be considered if they have sufficient studies and experience in computer science e.g. programming and mathematical methods.
Required background:
* strong background in mathematics (linear algebra, calculus and/or discrete mathematics)
* basic probability theory and statistics
* basic programming skills, algorithms and data structures
Knowledge in some of the following is considered an advantage:
* machine learning
* data mining and pattern discovery
* computational modelling and data analysis
* signal processing
* theoretical computer science
* mathematical and statistical physics
* soft computing, neural computation, computational intelligence
* artificial intelligence
* bioinformatics
* neuroinformatics, computational neuroscience
* computational linguistics, natural language processing
* scientific computation, high-performance computation

Success in GRE General, GRE Computer Science, GRE Mathematics or GMAT tests is considered a merit.
Students chosen to the Macadamia programme may be required to complement their earlier degree with complementary studies. All students with a Finnish University of Applied Sciences (AMK) degree are required to take complementary studies package. Complementary or personal complementary studies cannot be included in the Master’s degree.
