The MSc course is designed to integrate current cutting-edge research knowledge and expertise of important infectious diseases and their relationship to the immune system. The course is integrative and cohesive and combines up-to-date practical and theoretical based teaching methods to prepare students for careers in medicine, postgraduate research and opportunities in the bio-pharmaceutical industry.
Teaching and Assessment methods
The course caters for different student learning styles by offering a variety of teaching (formal lectures, practicals, tutorials and student presentations) and assessment modes (written, oral, practical, MCQ, SAQ).
Course Modules
In semester one, students acquire and apply knowledge in a total of five modules:
* Core Theory and Techniques in Infection and Immunity
* Infectious Disease
* Immunity
* Data Analysis
* Advanced Topics in Infection and Immunity (a more specialist, interactive module )
These are all taught by research-active lecturers of international standing. Students participate in a set of practicals some of which are generic to all MSc students in the School of Biological Sciences at the University. Special immunology practicals cover immunological techniques relevant to the research projects to be undertaken in the second semester and receive assistance from postgraduate students from within the department.
At the end of the first semester students select their research project to be undertaken from January until July in the second semester under the supervision of a member of staff of the Department of Infection, Immunity and Inflammation. The project write-up is submitted as a dissertation and forms a major part of their final degree mark.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
