Location of University of Leicester

The programme aims to provide students with knowledge and understanding of central themes and issues concerned with the study of history in different periods, contexts and settings and in-depth knowledge of a number of specific aspects of the past. It provides students with knowledge, understanding and experience of research methods and practices in history.

They will also develop transferable skills in communication, self-management and planning. The programme includes the training and support necessary to plan and carry out an extended research project to a high standard. It will equip students with the research skills needed for historical research at doctoral level.

* Political Leadership in 20th Century Britain

Options available to students on MA English Local History and MA Urban History are also available. Additional courses relating to the research interests of other colleagues in the school may be offered.

Teaching and assessment methods
Teaching is mainly by seminars which typically involve 5-10 students. Depending on the options taken, there may also be visits to local and national archives or trips to sites of historical relevance to a course. Students are also encouraged to attend specialist workshops and research seminars run by the School. Each module is assessed by coursework that takes a variety of forms and includes group work as well as individual assignments. All MA students complete a dissertation of 15-20,000 words, working closely with their research supervisor.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

Requirements

Applicants will normally be expected to have achieved an upper second-class honours degree in history or a cognate subject. Applications are also invited from those who do not possess the normal admission requirements but who can show enthusiasm and competence by having attended relevant certificated courses, by submitting published work or by writing qualifying essays to a first degree standard.
