The MSc in Media and Communication Research course will provide you with a critical knowledge of the historical development and key paradigm shifts in the study of media, culture and communication, and it will give you the background knowledge and research expertise necessary to confidently address issues such as:

* Key theories and debates in media, communication and cultural studies
* Methods and research approaches, tools, and skills for social science research
* Changing global media-scapes
* Media production, organisation and control
* Globalisation and commercialisation
* Key issues in quantitative and qualitative research design
* Data collection in social science research
* New communication technologies and their social, cultural and political implications
* Computer-assisted and web-based approaches to social science data management and analysis
* Advanced procedures for social science data analysis and interpretation
* Media organisations, ownership and control, and media professions
* News and communication processes
* Communication, audiences, and cultural identity
* Media, development and globalisation

The course involves a range of approaches to teaching and learning: lecture-based teaching, interactive seminar work with student and tutor contributions, group research work, and individual dissertation supervision. Taught modules will be assessed by continuous assessment in the form of a mixture of essays, annotated bibliographies, group research projects, web-based assignments, computing assignments using both statistical packages and qualitative text analysis packages, and a dissertation of 12,000-15,000 words on an approved topic.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

Requirements

Entry RequirementsAt least a good second class honours degree in any discipline, though a Social Science degree would be particularly relevant, from an institution recognised by the University. Applicants who do not have a first degree,
but who can demonstrate other relevant qualifications and/or experience may also be considered.

English Language Requirements

Applicants whose first language is not English, and who have not lived in a country where the first language is English for at least three years immediately before the start of their course, need to satisfy the University´s English language requirement.

* From students who take IELTS (the British Council´s International English Language Testing System), we look for an overall score of 6.0 or above for courses in Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering, Geography, Geology, Mathematics and Physics and Astronomy, and 6.5 or above for all other courses.
* From students who take TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), we look for 575/233/90* or above for courses in Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering, Geography, Geology, Mathematics and Physics and Astronomy, and 600/250/100* for all other courses. (*Scores for paper-based/computer-based/internet-based versions of TOEFL)

As well as the internationally-known IELTS and TOEFL tests, the University also accepts many other English language qualifications.
