The Forensic Section of the School of Psychology remains one of the largest groups of Forensic Psychologists in the UK and Europe.
Our research expertise includes work on:
* the interviewing of suspects and witnesses particularly vulnerable witnesses
* the detection of deception
* behavioural investigative analysis and comparative case analysis
* eye-witnessing and false memories
* interventions with offenders
* evaluation of intentions
and we are always interested in hearing PhD proposals in these areas.
The MSc Forensic Psychology is accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS). It is a full-time course designed to cover the application of psychology to forensic and legal issues. The principal aim of the course in to equip students with a sound knowledge and understanding of a broad range of topics in forensic and legal psychology. This knowledge includes not only an appreciation of theory and fact, but also an awareness of the strengths and limitations of research evidence, as well as its applications.
Students studying on the MSc in Forensic Psychology will study the following academic modules:
* Juvenile Delinquency
* Legal Psychology
* Criminology
* Research Methods
* Psychology and the Courts
* Empirical Dissertation
Students will also complete an eight-week work experience placement over the summer term.
A wide-range of placements are available, covering prisons, special hospitals, secure units, probation services, the police, and academic settings.
Teaching and assessment methodsTeaching is through lectures and seminars. Students can gain some limited practical experience on a short placement in a forensically related setting (prison, regional secure unit, local police etc.). Each module is assessed by written assignments including a placement report and a research dissertation.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take testEntry RequirementsA good first degree (upper second or above) or other qualification recognised as providing the Graduate Basis for Registration of the British Psychological Society. Some relevant work experience (voluntary or otherwise) is also required.
English Language Requirements
Applicants whose first language is not English, and who have not lived in a country where the first language is English for at least three years immediately before the start of their course, need to satisfy the University´s English language requirement.
* From students who take IELTS (the British Council´s International English Language Testing System), we look for an overall score of 6.0 or above for courses in Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering, Geography, Geology, Mathematics and Physics and Astronomy, and 6.5 or above for all other courses.
* From students who take TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), we look for 575/233/90* or above for courses in Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering, Geography, Geology, Mathematics and Physics and Astronomy, and 600/250/100* for all other courses. (*Scores for paper-based/computer-based/internet-based versions of TOEFL)
As well as the internationally-known IELTS and TOEFL tests, the University also accepts many other English language qualifications.
