Location of University of Leicester

This innovative degree stream has been developed in response to the increasing significance of the impact of terrorism in the fields of international security and policing. The programme will provide you with a detailed understanding of the key issues surrounding managing risk and security, policing and terrorism with a focus on global issues and their impact at the local level, particularly in a post 9/11 and 7/7 world.

You will explore the idea of terror as a concept, the history of terrorism and investigate the common myths associated with contemporary terrorism. You will learn how to critically appraise research as well as conduct and write up you own independent study on a topic of your choice.

Teaching and assessment methodsEach course is based on continuous assessment comprising a written assignment of 4,000 words for each module studied. Successful completion of all modules and the dissertation means candidates are
eligible for the MSc.


Contents

The MSc programme can be studied either full-time over one year or part-time over two years. The course consists of four core modules plus two optional modules. All six modules must be successfully completed to attain the Postgraduate Diploma in Terrorism, Security and Policing.

Each module is assessed via a 4,000 word essay. A 20,000 word dissertation must also be successfully completed to achieve the MSc degree.

You are also required to choose two out of the following four core choice modules: Responding to Terrorism, Surveillance and Society, Transnational Policing and Risk Management. You can then choose one optional module.

IELTS

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Requirements

The MSc programme is open to applicants with a first or second class honours degree (2:2 or above) or equivalent professional qualification. Consideration may be given to those without an undergraduate degree who can demonstrate relevant work experience and knowledge.

English Language Requirements

Applicants whose first language is not English, and who have not lived in a country where the first language is English for at least three years immediately before the start of their course, need to satisfy the University´s English language requirement.

* From students who take IELTS (the British Council´s International English Language Testing System), we look for an overall score of 6.0 or above for courses in Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering, Geography, Geology, Mathematics and Physics and Astronomy, and 6.5 or above for all other courses.
* From students who take TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), we look for 575/233/90* or above for courses in Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering, Geography, Geology, Mathematics and Physics and Astronomy, and 600/250/100* for all other courses. (*Scores for paper-based/computer-based/internet-based versions of TOEFL)

As well as the internationally-known IELTS and TOEFL tests, the University also accepts many other English language qualifications.
