Location of University of Oulu

Education and Globalisation (EdGlo) is a full-time two-year international Master’s programme (120 ECTS credits). It focuses on ethics, theory, policy, planning, curriculum, evaluation and comparative research in education. The central aim of the programme is to develop quality in education and to equip students to exercise socially responsible leadership in complex and diverse societies. The programme emphasises North-South-East-West dialogue and includes studies in multiculturalism, interculturalism, globalisation and their effects on various sectors of education. EdGlo graduates are competent to work in national and international contexts in the public, private and civil society sectors, in occupations such as project leaders, coordinators, educational consultants, evaluators, researchers, teachers and administrators.
Students major in educational sciences. The programme also includes a minor subject and an internship period which can be implemented in Finland or internationally in a variety of different settings such as intergovernmental agencies, non-governmental organisations or educational institutions. One third of the programme involves acquiring research tools, conducting research and writing a Master’s thesis in a collaborative and multicultural research environment. After completing the programme, students are awarded a Master of Arts (Education) degree which enables them to continue their academic studies at doctoral level. This degree does not constitute a formal teaching qualification. EdGlo graduates are able to:
· make informed and ethical decisions in complex and diverse education environments in local and global contexts
· conduct and utilize research that is robust and relevant to national and international debates in education
· work ethically and productively in partnership with diverse individuals, groups and communities
· show cross-cultural competence, seeing linguistic/cultural/ethnic/gender/ sexual/religious/ideological differences as a source of learning
· introduce multiple perspectives into their professional activities and research and engage with different knowledges/cultures in ethical ways
· relate to the constantly changing nature of education and society, recognizing professional development as a collaborative process of lifelong and lifewide learning
· use information technology to enhance professional development and practice in informed and critical ways


Contents

Students major in educational sciences. Language, Communication and Orientation Studies (5 ECTS)

Students with mother tongue other than Finnish:

* - Orientation to the Finnish culture and educational system (3 ECTS)
* - Introduction to the Finnish language (2 ECTS)

Students with Finnish as their mother tongue:

* - Orientation to the Finnish culture and educational system (3 ECTS)
* - Language studies (2 ECTS) (depending on previous studies): Second official language, Swedish or Other language studies

Advanced Studies in Educational Sciences (80 ECTS)

* Issues in globalisation (5 ECTS)
* Ethics and education (5 ECTS)
* Nordic education in the European and global context (5 ECTS)
* New learning environments and technology (5 ECTS)
* Educational policy, planning and leadership (5 ECTS)
* Research methodology (10 ECTS)
* Internship (5 ECTS)
* Masters Thesis (40 ECTS)

Minor Subject Studies (35 ECTS)

* Minor studies (25 ECTS) + Optional studies (10 ECTS) or
* Studies in Education: minor subject 'Education in Transition' (25-35 ECTS)
Students can select their minor subject on the basis of their previous studies, thesis topic or personal interest. Students with no background in Education must select 'Education in Transition' as their minor subject.

In addition to the lecturers from the Faculty of Education at the University of Oulu, there will be experts from various educational and other institutions, both from Finland and abroad, teaching in the programme. Studies offer students the latest research and professional knowledge in the area of education. Studies also include visits to different institutions in order to provide examples of good practice, and opportunities to combine theory and practice.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

Prerequisites:

1. Bachelor's degree or equivalent higher education degree; preference will be given to the students with a background in education (a minimum of 25 ECTS in education).
2. Sufficient English language proficiency (tested in the entrance interview)

Where a language other than Finnish or Swedish is used in the certificate, please include a translation in English (by an authorised translator).

• University transcript indicating the grading system of the institutionPlease attach an academic transcript of your Bachelor's studies. It must be an original transcript from the institution or an officially certified copy.

• A copy (copies) of other degrees/studies completedPlease attach officially certified copies of other degrees or studies you have finished/you finish before 31 July 2012.
• A Curriculum VitaePlease attach your free-form CV in English. Your CV should not be longer than 2 pages.


* Two reference letters should be provided.



Selection process STAGE II - Interview:

The purpose of the individual interview in English is to establish the applicant's aptitude for educational work, ability to discuss the content areas of the programme, motivation and the relevance of their research topic. An effort is also made to establish the applicant's social skills and language skills in English.
