The Master of Arts in Global Communications (MAGC) is a cutting-edge program designed for students who want to learn the rare combination of critical theoretical research skills in media and communications and practical hands-on training in branding, public relations, video production, and advocacy.
While many MA programs in Media and Communication Studies offer critical research or practical courses, MAGC is dedicated to rigor in both in the context of globalization. It offers courses with the best-trained researchers in their fields as well as with leading practitioners in communication businesses and the non-profit sector.
The MAGC at AUP focuses on:
* The massive technological revolution provided by the internet, digitalization.
* The economic transformations caused by brand globalization.
* The intercultural problems associated with these tendencies.
* The development of appropriate responses by governments, corporations, and NGOs.
* The development of communications industries—global advertising and image management.
As future employers peruse the résumés that cross their desks, looking for versatility, internet creativity, linguistic competencies, the capacity to work in teams, the ability to transfer skills to pressing situations, as well as the special perspective that only an international education provides, they seek candidates with a full arsenal of theoretical and practical skills. The specific focus of this Master of Arts — global media and global communications — prepares its graduates to be leaders in a world of cross-border dialogues of all sorts.
Coursework for MAGC can be completed in three semesters, including summer (courses offered in June and July). While the degree can be completed in one calendar year, the length of the internship and thesis components may vary. Many MAGC students choose to take additional time for their internship/thesis.
This program complements AUP's global perspective, international image, reach, and student and faculty population. AUP's institutional mission focuses on interdisciplinary study, ethical reflection, and, increasingly, a commitment to discipline-based interdisciplinary and internationalism at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The program includes both "professional" and "research" tracks, as well as a range of modalities suited to global students seeking an international education in a European capital.
The Master of Arts degree in Global Communications is accredited in the United States by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and reflects the new European norms articulated in the EUA Bologna Convention.
* The MA in Global Communications offers a balance between solid intellectual preparation in communications and hands-on professional training with international experts in brand management and advertising, marketing, cultural policy, and social movements communication.
* MA candidates will have the opportunity to acquire theoretical sophistication, skills-based mastery in key domains, and practical experience in the field of globa communications.
* MA recipients will manifest intellectual autonomy; participate in contemporary culture; and demonstrate imagination, creativity, and openness to new experiences, as well as the flexibility to think across disciplines and transfer skills between areas of expertise.
* MA recipients will demonstrate both the willingness and the expertise to reflect ethically on central issues covered by course work: globalization, media, civil society, and intellectual life via participation in the extensive opportunities for debate, conference attendance, and cultural events on the AUP campus.
* MA recipients will become autonomous producers of knowledge, informed decision-makers, good team members and risk takers, and ethically focused and discerning analysts of global communications issues.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
