The Master’s Programme in Marine Sciences offers the opportunity for you to take active part in the efforts to attain a more sustainable ocean environment. As a marine scientist, you are required to have a broad knowledge of marine conditions along with a keen eye for the whole picture and an ability to co-operate with other professionals in an interdisciplinary fashion. The Master’s Programme provides you with these skills.
Expertise is demanded in aquaculture, marine technical development, monitoring programs, coastal and fisheries management. Advisory and regulatory authorities require marine competence and the marine sections of teaching at schools and universities are often popular. The Marine Sciences programme is multidisciplinary and provides the students with knowledge and skills to actively contribute to marine research and for a better management of the oceans.
The first year includes two compulsory courses, which are taken by all Master’s student at the faculty. The rest of the year consists of courses freely chosen within your specialization.
The second year is devoted to your Masters’ Thesis, which carries 30, 45 or 60 hec. You can also take complimentary advanced courses within your specialization. Your thesis work can either be carried out connected to a research group at the faculty or in co-operation with an external partner. It can also be located to another country, for instance as a Minor Field Study.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

A Bachelor’s degree of Science in biology, chemistry or earth sciences. Since the majority of courses in marine science taught in English are advanced level courses in biology, all international applicants also need basic courses in biology of at least 60 hec at university level to be eligible.
Applicants must prove English knowledge by one of the following: TOEFL test result; paper based test score of 4.5 in written test and a total score of 575 or internet based test score of 20 in written test and a total score of 90, alternatively IELTS test result with an overall mark of at least 6.5 and no section below 5.5. This requirement does not apply to students with a Bachelor degree from an English speaking university, or to students having passed English level B at Swedish Upper Secondary School.
