Once students have successfully completed the Postgraduate Diploma in Human Resource Management (or equivalent), they can progress to the Master´s top-up which comprises an intensive seven day block release programme followed by a dissertation. The choice of dissertation topic will determine whether a student will be considered for the award of MSc Human Resource Development (MSc HRD) or MSc Human Resource Management (MSc HRM). Full-time students undertake the seven day block release in June and hand in their dissertation at the end of November or undertake the seven day block release in January and hand in their dissertation in April. Part-time students undertake the seven day block release in June and hand in their dissertation the following April. The final award will be granted to full-time and part-time students in July when they will graduate.
The Postgraduate Diploma provides students with the generalist grounding needed to operate as an HR professional, whilst the Master´s equips course members to operate effectively at a strategic HR level. The University of Portsmouth is a Centre of Research Excellence for the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development. Graduateship of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development is conferred upon successful completion of the Postgraduate Diploma in HRM (120 Master´s level credits).
The course can be studied full-time over 6 months or part-time over 12 months.
The Master's is taught in an intensive seven day teaching block in either January or June.
Strategic Human Resource Change and Development (15 credits)
This unit adopts a critically evaluative approach towards strategic HR within the context of organisational environments and change. The contribution of strategic HR and the choices of change strategy and process are explored. The assignment is workplace-related and explores strategic HR issues together with the theoretical and practical application of strategic change.
Dissertation (45 credits)
You will be allocated a supervisor who will help you plan, research and write a 15,000-word dissertation. Your dissertation subject choice will determine whether the final award is MSc Human Resource Development or MSc Human Resource Management.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
