Programme Description

The Portsmouth MBA programme is one of the longest-running MBAs in the UK. Whatever your discipline or employment sector, you will find our programme intellectually stimulating, challenging, relevant and rewarding. It is specifically designed to enhance your career by developing the use of strategy and decision-making capabilities within teams and at a personal level, giving you the underpinning knowledge necessary for leadership roles.

The Portsmouth MBA is a highly successful programme accredited by the Association of MBAs (AMBA), which demonstrates our high quality, reputation and comparability with other top Business Schools´ MBAs. AMBA is the only independent, recognised accreditation for MBA programmes, ensuring the course meets the highest global standards.

We provide full-time MBA (International) and part-time MBA (Executive) programmes for experienced graduate managers from any discipline, who aspire to accelerate their career development.

Our programmes will particularly suit those who wish to:

* pursue a strategic-level management programme that focuses on multidisciplinary perspectives and managerial competencies required to lead and facilitate strategic change and understand contemporary organisational challenges
* further develop their career in strategic management and organisational transformation within a global context

The MBA programme is ideally suited as a career development step to more senior management roles and responsibilities.

If you are an international student, a new UK Government scheme means that you will be eligible to work in the UK for a period of two years (from May 2008) on completion of your MBA. The scheme allows spouses, civil partners and children to accompany you whilst you are in the UK.

Part one

You will develop your knowledge of the key functions of management and explore the international business environment. Units include:

* Management Functions explores finance, marketing and operations and how they influence and improve the overall management of an organisation.
* Business Context relates behavioural, economic and UK legal concepts to the management of organisations and their business contexts.
* Integrative Management introduces activity-based learning and problem solving to the concepts and issues identified in the other part one subjects. Professional/personal development activities and a team building/leadership residential are also included.
* Master Classes are on-going throughout the course.
* Consultancy and Business Innovation spans both part one and part two. Operating as part of a small team, usually at board level, this unit will provide you with an opportunity to directly assist an external organisation in finding innovative yet realistic solutions to its current and future strategic challenges.

Part twoYou will develop strategic insights and capabilities on a corporate international business level, based on the knowledge you have acquired in part one. Units include:

* Strategy and Change addresses key issues that shape organisations, their orientation, transformation and change in complex and uncertain business environments.
* Management Decisions and Research Methods explores quantitative approaches to decision analysis and information systems, and provides detailed guidance for planning and undertaking an effective management research project.
* Strategic Leadership aims to develop your analytical and decision-making skills in complex strategic situations. It applies the concepts explored in Strategy and Change to a variety of corporate organisational concepts. This subject emphasises group-based activities and includes company visits, external corporate speakers and the European residential.

Part three

* In your Research Project you will undertake a substantial management research project (dissertation) that combines a review of previous research undertaken in your chosen topic with your own data collection and analysis. The research project provides a unique opportunity for you to demonstrate the subject knowledge you have acquired, as well as your analytical abilities and problem-solving skills - both are highly regarded by potential employers. During this phase your research will be supervised by an individually allocated, experienced academic, with expertise in your chosen topic area.

Our friendly and supportive environment uses formal lectures and seminars to provide the basis for the development of relevant knowledge, which is further enhanced in activity-based case studies. Our aim is to promote your career prospects by putting you into simulated situations where you have to analyse complex problems, explore the uncertainties involved, evaluate possible solutions and plan their implementation.

You will be assigned a personal tutor and have access to a specialist Academic Skills Unit that offers assistance on a wide range of issues from essay writing to time management and referencing conventions. If English is not your first language, there are free courses available to help familiarise you with the use of English for academic purposes.

For international students we have a dedicated team of advisors to support you as you settle into life in Portsmouth and at the University.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
