We aim to recruit students from a diverse background, but with some prior writing experience, and whose ambition is to complete a major project to a high standard. The course is therefore suitable for writers who wish to build confidence, sensitivity and critical understanding of their own work and the work of others. It will also help you understand where your own creative writing fits in with contemporary creative writing, both in terms of the writing itself and in relation to such issues as the market, writing practice and current
debates within differing genres.
The course is offered as a full-time course for one year or a part-time course for two years.
This one-year full-time or two-year part-time course is workshop based and consists of units focusing on both creative practice and critical understanding. The final creative dissertation can take the form of a screenplay, novel (or a major portion thereof) or short collection of prose or poetry (the equivalent of 30,000-40,000 words in length). The units you will study are:
* Exploratory Exercises (30 credits): experimentation in differing genres to build confidence in writing and research
* Comparative Critical Reading (30 credits): an exploration of the critical approaches to the written word with oral presentations and researched essays
* Critical Context (30 credits): critical reading with reference to your major creative project and developing a deeper understanding of the subject
* Final Project Development (30 credits): research and development of your major project. You will plan and complete the first third of your project under close supervision and peer support
* The Final Project (60 credits): the completion of a major work geared to a specific market
