It is a project-based programme that allows you to define the work and the themes that you want to focus on, whilst we provide the expertise and support to help you realise your own potential. Each student individually negotiates their project programme with our highly knowledgeable and enthusiastic staff, who are drawn from both academia and industry. This grounds your Masters in the real world.

The School maintains close links with companies across the range of its subject areas. You will also have access to our large-scale immersive 3D virtual reality system, optical motion capture facility, haptic devices, games research laboratories, Analogue and Digital sound studios, a surround sound studio, as well as an extensive range of the multimedia, video editing and post-production hardware and software. In addition, the University offers extensive student support, new sports facilities and a wide range of accommodation in an attractive seaside location.

By coming to the University of Portsmouth you will experience a lively and modern learning environment where you will have access to modern computing laboratories with the latest hardware and software, including multimedia applications and console development kits. The University´s academic staff maintain close links with industry, both locally and further afield. This ensures that our courses always reflect the current and future needs of commerce and industry.

The course can be studied full-time for one year or part-time for two years.


Contents

This project-based Masters course is aimed at those who wish to develop the wide range of intellectual, analytical and problem-solving skills required to pursue a career in computer games. Emphasis is placed on implementation, evaluation and reflecting on subject related issues, whilst building technological expertise.

* Primary Empirical Techniques For Original Research (Taught) - research methods.
* Professional Development (Taught) - planning and managing development projects.
* Project Definition (Self-Directed) - specifying the project´s scope and plan.
* Project Research Development (Self-Directed) - critical review of existing work.
* Project Resolution (Self-Directed) - development and evaluation of project artefact.

Two taught units extend your core research and organisational skills, which are then applied to an individually negotiated project programme. This self-directed but supervised project, to solve a practical or theoretical problem in the field, is supported by ex-games industry professionals with specialist insider knowledge and strong links to the local and international games industry. This challenging, stimulating and self-rewarding study environment will focus on your career potential by placing you at the cutting edge of technology, whilst developing your professional practice.

Requirements

An upper second-class honours degree in computing or an art-based subject with a significant computing component, or equivalent professional experience and/or qualifications. A project proposal and portfolio should be submitted with an application.

English language proficiency at a minimum of IELTS band 6.5 or equivalent.
