The Department of Mechanical Engineering specialises in the design of mechanical engineering structures, modelling of multi-technical systems, and laser-based manufacturing processes. Our extensive network of contacts with local, national and international industrial partners and research centres ensures that the teaching and research methods are up-to-date and reflect the needs of high technology mechanical engineering industries.

The Master´s Degree Programme in Mechanical Engineering offers specialisations in "Structural and Machine Design" and "Production Technologies". Particular emphasis is placed on future product design and production technologies. The programme aims to provide in-depth knowledge in design- or production-related areas such as machine design, steel structures, virtual prototypes, welding technology, laser technology, as well as modern production systems and production planning.

We educate highly competent engineering professionals who are both equipped to work in international companies and well grounded for doctoral studies. The Master´s programme provides the foundation for both constructive design as well as production-orientated tasks. Upon graduation, our professionals work in the fields of product development and design, management of design and production projects, technical sales and technical inspection.


Contents

Structure and Content of the Programme

The Master's degree programme in Mechanical Engineering is a two-year full-time programme leading to the degree of Master of Science (Technology). All lectures, exercises and laboratory work are conducted in English.

The programme is divided into four semesters. During the first three semesters the students should complete about 90 ECTS of classroom and laboratory instruction. The first semester is common to all students and encompasses both a brief introduction to the field of mechanical engineering and language & communication studies essential for carrying out Master's level engineering studies successfully. This enables students to make an informed choice at the end of the second semester as which major subject to choose:

* Structural and Machine Design
* Production Technologies

Structural and Machine Design

In "Structural and Machine Design" the focus is on both the theory and practice
of the development of mechanical engineering systems for performance, strength
and durability. The students learn to use state-of-the-art computer tools for
creating and testing virtual prototypes. In that way complex mechatronic systems
and structures can be designed, tested and optimised before a prototype is fabricated. Studies include advanced studies in steel structures and virtual design.

Production Technologies

In "Production Technologies" the students learn about modern production systems
and production planning which will be integral parts of tomorrow´s factories. A special
emphasis is given to welding technology, high technology machining operations and sheet & plate forming. As lasers are increasingly being used in high technology manufacturing, the students learn about laser welding and cutting together with a variety of surface improvement techniques, such as laser cladding and surface hardening. Studies include advanced studies in welding technology, production technology and laser technology.

The Master´s thesis, worth a further 30 ECTS, is conducted during the fourth semester. It is a research or design project carried out in the field of machine design, steel structures, welding technology, laser technology, production technology or sheet metal technology.

Requirements

General Ellibility

Minimum requirement: Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree or equivalent in mechanical engineering or in a closely related field. or Bacherlor's degree (tradenomi) from a Finnish university of applied sciences or a Russian Spetsialist degree in the field in question.

Language Requirement's

Consequently students who have not completed a Bachelor’s degree in English in an EU/EEA country or in Australia, Canada, New Zealand or in the USA must have obtained an approved English language qualification Academic TOEFL 80 iBT/550 PBT; Academic IELTS 6.0; Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) level A, B or C. University language certificates are not accepted.
