The Degree Programme in Information Technology leads to the degree of Master of Science (Technology). Studying information technology is worth while because working in this field of expertise means building the future, there is a wide range of career opportunities, the employment rate is high and the salary competitive.
Through the programme the students not only acquire the prerequisites to succeed in the actual working life, but the studies also establish a firm basis for postgraduate studies and scientific work for those students eager to follow their inspiration to keep contributing to the research community. The main research fields of the Laboratory of Information Processing are machine vision and software engineering. The research of the Laboratory of Communications Engineering is focused on communication networks, telecommunications software and digital content production.
The aim of the Master´s Degree Programme is to prepare the student professionally and academically in those areas of information technology, which are required in positions in industry. Another aim of the Master´s Degree Programme is to provide the student with the readiness to undertake post-graduate studies and independent studies in some area of information technology.
Graduates from the degree programme find employment in e.g. software houses, telecommunications, digital media, industries, product development, research (doctoral studies), education, consultancy, or starting a business of their own. These professionals have an excellent employment outlook.
The Department of Information Technology has been nominated as a centre of excellence in both education and research. Due to the department´s wide selection of courses, you can develop your skills by focusing on the major subject of your interest, and broaden your knowhow by choosing e.g. Industrial Management or Business as a minor subject. In addition, it is possible to study abroad as an exchange student.
Master´s Degree Programme in Information Technology is a two-year programme for both Finnish and foreign students, who have a Bachelor´s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science or equivalent discipline. The programme is worth of 120 ECTS credits and includes coursework of 90 ECTS credits and a Master´s thesis of 30 ECTS credits, leading to a Master of Science in Technology degree.
Major Subjects
The following alternative fields of specialisation (major subjects) are available at LUT
1. Intelligent Computing
2. Communications Software
3. Software Engineering
1. Students of Intelligent Computing get a broad idea of the applications and methods of information processing as well as information processing systems and their design. Advanced studies focus on intelligent information processing and its applications.
The graduates can work in:
o Research and development of information processing systems and software
o Project planning and management
o Research and teaching in universities
2. Students of Communications Software gain knowledge and will become experts in the following areas:
o Design, development and maintenance of communications systems
o Development of communications software and hardware products
Students will get specialized in designing and implementing communications software. They will gain in-depth view of network architectures including wired, wireless and optical networks. Students will learn how to develop secure services to wireless terminals. In courses related to Parallel and Distributed Computing students will learn the basic concepts of parallel computing and different ways to harness the power of various parallel computer platforms. Students gain knowledge on parallel algorithms and deepen it on more advanced courses. Existing programming skills will be enhanced to utilize parallel methods in distributed and shared memory machines by implementing algorithms on our laboratory´s parallel computing environment. Various changing themes relating to parallel computing and data communications are discussed in seminar courses.
3. Students of Software Engineering will get expertise in software development, its processes, methods and tools. Typical roles for the graduates of this major include software architects, programming experts, software product managers, and systems analysts.
Common tasks in the field include
o Design, development, and maintenance of software and information systems
o Software and systems analysis and design
o Participation to software development projects in either supplier or customer role
o Software research and product development
o Management of software development organizations.
