The MSc Sports Performance is designed as an applied multi-disciplinary programme with a strong central inter-disciplinary theme. Each of the key discipline areas in sports performance is studied including physiology, psychology and biomechanics.
There are a number of options available in, for example, the areas of nutrition, sports therapy and technological applications. The emphasis in each of these units is on application of theory to a range of populations from competitive athletes to reluctant and recreational participants. In addition, students undertake a research training unit and an independent project.
The Course, therefore, is designed to produce competent and confident sport and exercise scientists who are able to translate theory into practice.
Professional sports scientists are required in every sport to ensure that athletes have the optimal preparation in terms of conditioning, nutritional, psychological and technical skills and general lifestyle matters. The opportunities in the UK and further a field are expanding as nations increasingly recognise the power of sporting excellence.
On the other hand, you may prefer to use the knowledge and skills you learn to work with developing athletes or children or recreational groups to improve their sports and exercise abilities and maximise their potential
The programme is offered in two formats:
* a full-time (three semester) course
* a part-time (six semester) course
The delivery of the course in either format is modular, so there is a great deal of flexibility.
The programme has a number of core and optional units, although optional units will only be available during the second semester. Units have 15 credits attached, with the exception of the final MSc Project, which is a 60-credit unit (one credit equals ten hours learning).
Initially you will receive the taught elements of the programme, with the final semester restricted to completion of the MSc Project. In the event that you are unable to complete all 180 credits for the award of MSc, there are two additional exit awards:
* Postgraduate Certificate (PG Cert) which is obtained if you have successfully completed 60 credits.
* Postgraduate Diploma (PG Dip) which is obtained if you have successfully completed 120 credits.
Below is an example of the course structure.
Please note this is subject to innovation and progression within the field and may therefore change slightly over the years.
