The MSc in Applied Economics and Financial Economics equips students with a robust knowledge of the techniques used to analyse financial and monetary issues and the ability to apply them.
The programme allows students to study core courses in micro- and macroeconomics as a foundation for two compulsory monetary and financial modules which are central to this masters degree. In addition, there are a range of options including finance, financial econometrics, behavioural finance, advanced macroeconomics and international macroeconomics.
Theoretical knowledge is underpinned with training in the collection, use, presentation and interpretation of economic data, including time-series, cross-section, financial econometrics and panel data. To complement this, students learn how to use econometric software packages to assist with data analysis, and acquire the skills to collect and construct new data sources.
This one year full-time programme requires students to complete 120 credits of core and optional modules before undertaking a supervised dissertation.
During the first semester students take core modules in:
* Economic Data Analysis
* Economic Policy Analysis
* Macroeconomic Analysis
* Microeconomic Analysis
They then take four more modules in the second semester, two of which are compulsory:
* Applied Money and Finance
* Monetary Theory and Practice
The remaining modules can be selected from a wide range including:
* International Macroeconomics
* Labour Economics
* Economic Growth in Theory and Practice
* Income Distribution and Poverty
* Trade Analysis and Policy
* Global Environmental Issues
* Financial Economics
* Behavioural Finance
* Development Policy Analysis

Note that not all Semester 2 modules are taught in every year.
After successfully completing exams at the end of the second Semester, students write a supervised Dissertation over the summer, on a topic related to Applied Economics and Financial Economics.
