Location of Sheffield Hallam University

These courses are for a range of professionals with relevant academic and clinical expertise wanting to gain an ultrasound qualification. State registration is desirable but not essential. Attendance varies according to module but is generally based on day release (normally a Tuesday).

You must be working clinically with access to supervised scanning in your chosen area of practice to apply learning to the clinical setting. It is your responsibility to find relevant clinical work.

This course provides a rigorous academic experience and challenges you to analyse your professional experience. Clinical practitioners reflect on their professional practice and development and continue updating within this academic framework.

An integral part of your professional portfolio is a development portfolio. This innovative module equips you with the knowledge and skills to develop a professional portfolio to support your clinical practice. It helps you to build your critical understanding and expertise in your area of ultrasound practice. It also provides evidence of clinical competency in your chosen area.


Contents

Each of the named awards has a number of core modules which all students must take. These are followed by clinical optional modules.

PgCert core modules

* professional portfolio of clinical competence (in your chosen clinical area)
* scientific principles of ultrasound

Clinical modules

* cardiac ultrasound practice
* obstetric and gynaecological ultrasound practice
* abdominal ultrasound practice
* gynaecological ultrasound practice
* vascular ultrasound practice
* focused area of ultrasound practice

All other postgraduate certificates

* professional portfolio of clinical competence
* scientific principles of ultrasound
* clinical module specific to route or focused scope of ultrasound practice

Students who successfully complete a postgraduate certificate may go on to take the Postgraduate Diploma in Medical Ultrasound.

PgDip core modules

Students choose from the Pg Certificate modules but they must be in a different clinical area to the modules studied in the 1st year.

Progression to the MSc is dependent on taking a relevant research module or equivalent module

Requirements

This course is open to health professionals using ultrasound in diagnosis. It is an in-service course and as such applicants must be employed in a clinical setting or have written agreement for appropriately supervised clinical placement. The University is not responsible for finding clinical placements for students.

We consider each candidate on an individual basis according to their ability to meet the demands of the programme. Normal entry requirements are one of the following

* a pass degree in radiography or equivalent professional qualification
* Diploma of the College of Radiographers (DCR) or equivalent professional qualification and proven ability to cope with the academic demands of postgraduate study

We normally expect that candidates are state registered or have evidence of relevant academic and clinical expertise.
