Location of Sheffield Hallam University

The course is for people with a first degree in a relevant area such as social or biological sciences, or with a relevant professional qualification. You learn about occupational therapy through practice in various health and social care and voluntary organisations.

The course includes four periods of practice in occupational therapy or related services to give you at least 1,000 hours of relevant and varied experience with people who have different health needs.

We support your clinical practice through an academic programme delivered one day a week in the University. You take eight academic modules during the course of the programme.

After you graduate you can apply for registration with the UK Health Professions Council and find employment as an occupational therapist anywhere in the UK. You need registration before you can work as an occupational therapist.

Attendance

First Year

Six week full-time induction period.

February to June - 13 week occupational therapy practice experience (Monday to Wednesday) plus one day in University (Thursday) and one day personal study (Friday).

September to November - 13 week occupational therapy practice experience (Monday to Wednesday) plus one day in University (Thursday) and one day personal study (Friday).

Second year

February to June - 13 week occupational therapy practice experience (Monday to Wednesday) plus one day in University (Thursday) and one day personal study (Friday).

May to July and September to December - full-time study and research, one or two days at University.

Third year

Eight week full-time practice experience.

Full-time study one day a week at the University

Associated careers

You can apply for registration with the UK Health Professions Council and find careers as an occupational therapist.

Assessment

We assess your service practice to meet professional requirements and your academic modules through coursework.

IELTS

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Requirements

You must normally have

* a GCSE pass at grade C or above in English and mathematics
* some experience of research or knowledge of research methods
* previous experience in a managerial, supervisory or leadership capacity or be able to demonstrate comparable personal qualities

and at least one of the following

* a first degree in a relevant subject including any psychological, sociological, biological or health sciences
* a professional qualification at degree level such as teaching, nursing, social work or an allied health profession

You must demonstrate an understanding of occupational therapy, have good communication skills, leadership qualities and an interest in working with people regardless of age, ethnicity or disability. Skills in using technology are also important.

We interview all applicants who meet the entry criteria for the course. We deal with each application on individual merit.

If you have a health or social care professional qualification at diploma level we expect you to demonstrate recent continuing professional development, and provide some evidence of academic activity to show your ability to work at masters level. You may need to submit a short essay so that we can assess academic potential.
If English is not your first language you need an IELTS score of 7.0 or above.

Accreditation

Graduates can apply for registration with the UK Health Professions Council. you can also become full members of the British Association of Occupational Therapists. You must be registered with the Health Professions Council in order to practise as an occupational therapist.
