Location of Sheffield Hallam University

This course is for experienced in-service teachers of TESOL who wish to gain a postgraduate qualification. Participants work as part of an international community of teachers via on-line discussion. Accreditation equivalence for professional TEFL and TESOL diplomas may be available.

This course improves your ability to

* evaluate critically areas of the TESOL profession´s theory and practice
* extend your knowledge and understanding in specialist areas
* complete a research project related to your working situation

This is an excellent opportunity for both native and non-native speakers of English to gain a qualification that is increasingly necessary for progression to senior academic and management posts both in the UK and overseas.


Contents

Postgraduate Certificate (60 M level credits)

Subject areas covered include

* linguistics
* phonology
* psycholinguistics
* language skills and assessment
* grammar
* discourse analysis
* TESOL portfolio 1 reflection on practice
* TESOL portfolio 2 reflection on practice

Postgraduate Diploma (60 M level credits)

Subject areas include

* a review of research in current language teaching methodology
* English language teaching management
* psycholinguistics
* language analysis
* teacher education
* testing and evaluation
* young learners

MA (60 M level credits)

* dissertation

Subject areas covered include

* research methods (qualitative and quantitative)
* design of a research project

You work consecutively through stages one to three of this course but may leave or take a break after the postgraduate certificate and/or the postgraduate diploma.

IELTS

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Requirements

Applicants must have a degree or equivalent qualification, at least two years´ experience of teaching in the profession and should fulfil one of the following criteria

* successfully completing the Trinity College London Certificate in TESOL, Cambridge CELTA or equivalent
* English language skills equivalent to IELTS level 7.0

Entrants who have successfully completed a recognised professional teaching diploma in TESOL, for example the Trinity College Licentiate Diploma or Cambridge (DELTA) are exempt from stage one.
