East European Studies Online provides its students with knowledge of Eastern Europe. The advanced graduate degree program teaches the requisites necessary for an employment of East European concern, but also prepares students for further scientific work.

Representatives from business, research, politics and administration confirm a growing demand for experts on Eastern Europe, yet appropriate education and training are scarce. Freie Universität (FU) Berlin has taken the initiative to respond to this obvious need. The FU Institute for East European Studies is well reputed for its East-West competence.

The blended-learning graduate program East European Studies is multidisciplinary and contains political, social, historical, cultural, economic, and legal knowledge. Students are enabled to analyze and interpret developments and situations in Eastern Europe and to assess them within their respective political, social, legal, economic, historical and cultural contexts. Moreover, students will be equipped with the skills that are necessary to work out regional questions and problems in a multidisciplinary and comparative way.

The emphasis is placed on online learning. Multimedia, in particular electronic media, is used to convey the contents. The units will be presented online. Additionally, there will be two obligatory in-house classes per year. The working language is English. Successful completion is rewarded with a Master's degree (M.A.).

The area studies Master's program is mainly directed at young professionals who wish to gain further qualification. They receive preparation for a professional career, research work or further study.

Contents

East European Studies consists of the following modules: Introduction and Tools, Politics, Society, Humanities, Law, Economics, History, Intercultural Communication, Globalization, Migration, European Integration, Conflict Management, and Project Management. As of 2010, there will be a new module on Energy Politics and Security. Students will have to participate in twelve of these modules. The modules consist of various units. Each unit includes exams and assignments. Credit points will be awarded for successful completion (partly in working groups).

Freie Universität Berlin's advanced graduate degree program East European Studies combines online self study with full-time attendance periods in Berlin (in-house classes).

The e-learning part of the program works with an online learning management system (Blackboard). Participants receive a password that enables them to enter this learning environment. Communication with instructors and fellow students takes place via email.

In-house classes serve to get to know one another in person and to deepen particular points of interest in more traditional ways of teaching like seminars, lectures, or discussions. They offer the welcome chance to meet the other students, the instructors as well as the program team in person.
