The Master's in Linguistics gives you insights into the many ways that language is embedded in human cognition through research and study into such topics as phonetics, semantics, syntax and text.
The Master's programme in Linguistics, which is taught in English, is intended for students from all over the world who combine a talent for research with curiosity about language and are interested in pursuing research into language and the way it is embedded in human cognition. The programme is guided by the following main questions: Which cognitive faculties underlie human language, and how do they interact? This programme offers courses in the following fields: computational linguistics and logic, experimental psycholinguistics, language acquisition, phonetics, phonology/morphology, semantics/pragmatics, syntax (and its interfaces with other systems), and text linguistics. Students select one of these fields as their major and complement it with a minor to suit their individual interests. Part of the curriculum consists of an internship in a research project within the Utrecht institute of Linguistics (OTS) or another research institute in the Netherlands or abroad. Students complete their studies by writing a Master's thesis based on their research.
The curriculum consists of courses in the major and minor tracks, a course in research methods, a term paper at the end of the first year, an internship designed to allow the student's participation in ongoing research at the institute and of course a Master's thesis. One entire semester (of the four semesters in the programme) will be devoted to the preparation and writing of the thesis.
During the first semester, you take courses in a large number of sub-fields of linguistics, in order to prepare you for the choice of your major. You will choose one track as your major. During your first year, you take three courses in your major, in addition to a course from a different track (your minor). During the second semester, all students participate in the Research Seminar, which is intended to provide a common ground for students from the different tracks in their approach to linguistics. The first year is concluded with a term paper, which in most cases will prepare the ground for the topic that you will concentrate on in your second year.
Throughout the first year, you will be confronted with the field of linguistics in all its variety. A compulsory course introduces all students to linguistics as an academic discipline and a scientific study, followed by a research seminar covering topics from all sub-disciplines on offer in the curriculum.
The second year includes another elective course, as well as the Research Methods course corresponding to the major track (shared by several tracks). In addition, you will take an internship either within the institute or elsewhere. The internship may focus on fundamental or applied research. In the first part of the second year, you will also choose a topic and write a research plan for your Master's thesis; you will carry out that plan in the second term.
Students may start this Master's programme twice during the academic year: on September 1 and (after consultation with the Programme Coordinator) on February 1. The year is divided into two semesters, running from September till January and February till June. A semester is divided into two course blocks. Normally students will take two courses of 7.5 ECTS each per block.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
