Through a mixture of core and optional modules, you will develop the following:
* Knowledge and understanding of the basic principles of materials and the necessary background science;
* Knowledge and understanding of materials processing technology relevant to industry;
* Understanding of the relationships between the mechanical properties of materials, their microstructure and their processing history;
* The ability to communicate ideas effectively in written reports, verbally and by means of presentations to groups;
* Ability to exercise original thought;
* Ability to plan and undertake an individual project;
* Ability to understand and apply the theory, method and practice of materials engineering and design in a wide range of industries;
* Interpersonal, communication and professional skills.

* High Performance Ceramics and Glasses
* Advanced Materials
* Materials Under Stress
* Advanced Materials Characterisation
* Materials in Service
The elective modules current include:
* Information Technology for Engineering
* Conservation and Recycling of Materials
* Surface Engineering and Characterisation
* Polymer Engineering
* Fibre Reinforced Composites Engineering
* Technology and Knowledge Management
* Stress Analysis Techniques
* Aerospace Materials or Automotive Materials
* Electron-Optical and X-Ray Techniques
* Advanced Joining Technology
Please note that all module details are subject to change.
In addition, you will undertake a materials technology research project / dissertation on a subject of your choice. This gives you the chance to complete a major piece of independent research under the guidance of a suitably experienced supervisor.
Course Structure
The MSc in Advanced Materials can be taken on a full-time basis over 1 year (September to September) or part-time over 2 years.
You will take a combination of core and optional modules (worth 120 credits), along with a major individual research-based project (worth 60 credits) - these are often linked with an industrial company.
Modules on this course look at examples, case studies and projects to create a programme of study that is relevant to.
