Course Content

This course aims to develop your ability to think and function in an integrated manner across the areas of materials engineering and manufacture.
Through a mixture of core and optional modules, you will develop the following:

* Knowledge and understanding of the basic principles of materials and the necessary background science;
* Knowledge and understanding of advanced manufacturing technology relevant to industry;
* Understanding of the relationships between the mechanical properties of materials, their microstructure and their processing history;
* The ability to communicate ideas effectively in written reports, verbally and by means of presentations to groups;
* Ability to exercise original thought;
* Ability to plan and undertake an individual project;
* Ability to understand and apply the theory, method and practice of materials manufacture in a wide range of industries;
* Interpersonal, communication and professional skills.
The MSc in Advanced Materials Manufacture offers a good degree of flexibility by combining core compulsory modules with a range of elective modules - this means that you can create a programme of study that reflects your interests. The core modules offered on this course are:
* Advanced surface engineering and characterisation
* Advanced metal forming
* Polymer engineering
* Aerospace materials
* Materials under stress
* Materials in service
* Advanced materials characterisation
* Advanced joining technology
The elective modules currently available are listed below:
* Information technology for engineering
* High performance ceramics and glasses
* Conservation and recycling of materials
* Fibre reinforced composites engineering
* Technology and knowledge management
* Rapid product development
Please note that all module details are subject to change.
Once you have completed the taught components of the course, you will undertake a major individual research-based project, often linked with an industrial company.
Examples of such projects have looked at manufacture of metallic foams of crashworthiness and development of novel welding procedures for titanium alloys.

Course Structure
The MSc in Advanced Materials Manufacture can be taken on a full-time basis over 1 year (September to September) or part-time over 2 years.
You will take a combination of core and optional modules (worth 120 credits), along with a major individual research-based project (worth 60 credits) - these are often linked with an industrial company.
Modules on this course look at examples, case studies and projects to create a programme of study that is relevant to.
