This groundbreaking course, the first of its kind in Scotland, is based on the experience of our staff working worldwide in wildlife conservation, developing sustainable livelihoods through the conservation of communities and natural resources. It combines both cutting edge research and practice, with a strong emphasis on the skills required for a better understanding of the natural environment.
You do not necessarily need to have a biological background as you will quickly become aware of the main scientific principles. You'll also gain a strong business knowledge and valuable consultancy experience which provides you with the skills for future employment.
This is a particularly applied course and you will be learning from case studies of work carried out by our teaching staff. Field trips form an integral part of the syllabus and you will complete an independent piece of research, possibly abroad, allowing you to explore the areas that interest you the most. The experience we provide will help you decide what role you wish to play in this expanding and varied industry so you graduate with the skills and confidence to realise your potential.
Skills
You'll gain a variety of both scientific and business skills including ecological field skills, contract tendering, questionnaire design and analysis, marketing, proposal and report writing. The applied nature of this course also encourages the development of generic skills that will make you more employable including communication, IT, problem solving, research and team working.

The emphasis on research in this course equips you with the knowledge and skills required to continue on to postgraduate study, including possible PhD study within the school and a further academic career.
The course is studied full-time over one year and is split up into three trimesters. You will learn by a variety of teaching methods including lectures, tutorials, laboratory sessions, field trips, and through independent study. There may also be some opportunities to study abroad. This course can also be studied part-time with attendance.

Scientific Methods, Humans & Wildlife, and Environmental Management for Ecotourism OR Tourism Concepts & Issues OR Managing Heritage Tourism
On successful completion of these modules you will be eligible for a Postgraduate Certificate.
Trimester 2
Field & Laboratory Skills, Evolution and Taxonomy, and Case Studies in International Tourism OR Tourism, Hospitality & Events Industry Project
On successful completion of these modules you will be eligible for a Postgraduate Diploma.
Trimester 3
Independent research project
On successful completion of this you will be awarded your masters degree.

Take testYou should hold an honours degree or equivalent in a biological sciences subject, tourism or equivalent degree, e.g. Geography would be considered. If you hold a qualification of a lower level such as an HND in a biological science subject, as well as considerable work experience, or if you have extensive work experience alone, then we would invite you to make an application.
English Language Requirements
If English is not your first language, you´ll need to provide evidence that you can read, write, speak and understand English satisfactorily. For most courses, in additional to satisfying the standard entry requirements, we normally require international students (check) to demonstrate their English ability through an English language test, usually IELTS (International English Language Testing System), or TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language).
Courses require an IELTS score of 6.0, which is equivalent to ToEFL 550 (paper-based), 213 (computer-based) or 79-80 (internet-based).
