An MSc by Research is ideal for students who are particularly interested in a specific research area at masters level and provides an excellent platform for progression to PhD-level study. The MSc by research is the equivalent of one third of a PhD and thus mainly consists of a major research project. This project is then complemented by formal research methods training provided within the School of Life Sciences.
The MSc by research is also an opportunity to link with a business partner in the form of a mini Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP). The nature and structure of this KTP would be negotiated on a case by case basis.
Students will have access to the full range of specialised laboratory facilities in the School of Life Sciences. All the Sport and Exercise Science staff are active in research and are members of the Biomedicine and Sport Science Research group which gained a `4´ in the last Research Assessment Exercise. To assist prospective students, applications are particularly welcome in the following areas of research.
* Physiology
* Exercise interventions with special populations (diabetics, Parkinson´s Disease, obese individuals)
* Impact of ageing on sporting performance
* Cycling physiology
* Active transport (cycling)
* Thermoregulation during exercise
* Workability and occupational physiology
* Impact of air pollution on athletic performance
* Psychology
* Stress and coping- interventions and responses
* Factors affecting physical activity levels in special populations
* Coaching
* Talent Identification and development
* Evaluation of coach education programmes
* Biomechanics
* Biomechanics of Golf
* 3-D analysis of Swimming
* Dynamic profiling
* Exercise Immunology
* Biomarkers of lymphocyte cellular senescence
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
More informationThe standard entry qualifications are a first or 2i Honours Degree in a related Sport and Exercise Science area. A lower level qualification with appropriate experience equivalent to the above may be considered on an individual basis.
English Language RequirementsIf English is not your first language, you´ll need to provide evidence that you can read, write, speak and understand English satisfactorily. For most courses, in additional to satisfying the standard entry requirements, we normally require international students (check) to demonstrate their English ability through an English language test, usually IELTS (International English Language Testing System), or TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language). Courses require an IELTS score of 6.0, which is equivalent to ToEFL 550 (paper-based), 213 (computer-based) or 79-80 (internet-based).
