The Research Master's programme focuses on the interdisciplinary study of Classical Antiquity, the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
In the programme you examine the material, social and intellectual developments in the societies developing in Europe, including all regions bordering the Mediterranean from Antiquity to c. AD 1700. You will gain an understanding of the theoretical background to academic study within the humanities, with particular attention to Ancient, Medieval and Renaissance studies. You will also be prepared for independent academic study of Classical Antiquity, the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. At least one semester will be spent abroad. Within this broad field of studies, you choose one of four distinct specializations: Ancient Studies, Medieval Studies, Medieval Celtic Studies or Renaissance Studies. At the same time, the programme allows you to gain knowledge of methodically related yet often separately offered fields of studies, and to study them from the perspective of the longue durée.
Study Programme Four tracks
The past is a foreign country: they do things differently there’. If these words are true of any period in history, they certainly hold true for the pre-modern periods of Western Civilisation, i.e. Antiquity, the Middle Ages or the Renaissance. Furthermore, each of these periods needs a different ‘map’, and different skills in map reading. Therefore teaching is done in four different tracks, with Medieval Celtic Studies making up the fourth track. These tracks have hardly any overlap, and each track has its own programme and coordinator.
Nevertheless, there are certain similarities between the tracks’ study programmes. Students need skills to deal with both written and unwritten sources. These sources can be studied in a meaningful way only when taking their coherence into account. Written and material evidence often provide quite different information about the societies that produced it. For these reasons, students in any track are trained both to study several relevant disciplines independently and to evaluate the results of research done in other disciplines.
Knowledge is also required about the relations between the academic study of pre-modern Classical Antiquity, the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, opinions about these periods current in present-day society, and the circumstances which, in the past, led to the development of these views.
Specialist Knowledge
More than in the study of more recent periods in Western civilization, specialist knowledge is needed to make sense of the written culture produced, kept and used in these periods. The languages in which these sources were written also vary considerably from one period to the next. Within the different tracks, students will develop different scholarly skills. Similarly, as the discourses in the fields studied may differ, several ‘state of the art’-courses will be on offer.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
