For a qualified nurse currently working in palliative care, this course provides the opportunity to take the next step to an advanced career role. You'll gain an in depth understanding of the theoretical knowledge and practical skills you need to practice at an advanced level, as well as the ability to critically appraise relevant health and social policy.

You'll also acquire the knowledge and skills you need to address ethical and professional issues, such as the multi-dimensional needs of patients and their families, the interdependent roles of the multi-professional team within palliative care, and the philosophical and methodological underpinning of research applied to palliative care practice.
As a graduate specialising in palliative care, you will enjoy increased employment opportunities in the nursing profession.

Skills

You'll develop a combination of theoretical and practical skills in this course, including critical thinking when considering the issues associated with practice, knowledge of research methods and their application, and efficient approaches to time management, prioritisation and workload planning. You will also examine the social, cultural, ethical and political influences on developments within palliative care from a national and global perspective.

Career Prospects

As Edinburgh's top university for Graduate Employability (HESA 2010) and one of the top in the UK for Graduate Prospects (The Independent and The Times University Guides for 2009), we can offer you a valuable head-start in your chosen career.
As a graduate you will enjoy increased employment opportunities in the nursing profession, and will be well placed for advancement in your nursing career. Such advancement may include a move to a research-based role, or specialisation in the clinical or educational field of palliative care. Future posts you may consider are

* palliative care nurse specialist
* palliative care nurse consultant

If you are an allied health care professional such as a chaplain, GP, physiotherapist, etc. this will also allow you recognition as an advanced practitioner in the area of palliative care.
