MSc or Postgraduate Diploma
The MSc and PGDip courses in Pharmaceutical Analysis aim to equip students with specialized knowledge and skills that makes them ideally trained to take up jobs as analytical scientists in the pharmaceutical, food and drinks industries.
Students on the course develop an ability to apply the principles of statistical, analytical and instrumental methods in the quantitative and qualitative analysis of drugs and related substances.
Career Prospects
Many of our graduates obtain positions in the pharmaceutical & chemical industries and some have continued into PhD research. Previous graduates of the course include a number of world-renowned academics, the current Head of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and the previous Head of the European Pharmacopoeia Laboratory based in Strasbourg.
The course consists of four theory and two practical modules running between October and April followed by examinations. Students who pass all exams and wish to proceed to MSc then undertake a 10 week research project, either in the university or at an external company or organization, and submit a thesis at the end of August.
World Class Facilities
The new SIPBS building is purpose-built to house modern state-of-the-art facilities. Students have access to the full range of analytical instrumentation used in the pharmaceutical industry (NMR, UV, ATR-FTIR, MS, HPLC, GC and LC/GC-MS).
Expert tuition
Course material is taught by experts based in SIPBS, with additional specialized lectures from a visiting Professors and world-renowned scientists who are working in the pharmaceutical and analytical industries and legislative bodies, including the European Pharmacopoeia.
Teaching and Assessment
Teaching of theory and applications is through lectures, tutorials and web-based learning. The material is further reinforced with practical sessions which provide hands-on experience with a wide range of modern instrumental techniques. Assessment is through both written and practical examinations and submission of a thesis (MSc students only).
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

First or second class Honours degree or equivalent qualification in an appropriate science.
In addition to academic qualifications, you must also be able to show that you have a sufficient grasp of English. If English is not your first language you will need to provide evidence of your proficiency before you can begin the course, and you are strongly advised to take the IELTS or the TOEFL test examination. The University's general entry requirements are IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 600 (including the Test of Written English), TOEFL 250 (computer based test) and TOEFL 100 (internet based test).
