Commercial property has become an increasingly popular means of investment, creating additional demand for skilled investment, management and valuation surveyors. The current climate has reinforced the need to maximize the return from, and productivity of, real estate assets. These days, to effectively engage in property markets you need the skills to analyse financial and investment data, as well as being aware of the wide range of principles that underpin the valuation, management and development of property investment assets.

Whether you're from an estate management, investment or business background, this course, which is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), will equip you with the ability to keep abreast of the rapid developments in all property related areas, and the methods with which to effectively apply them.

Skills

Working with industry practitioners, you will gain knowledge of the wide range of principles that underpin property investment assets; including management, economics, property law and property valuation methodology, property development, and the skills to apply these effectively. You will develop your ability to analyse, assess and synthesise solutions to problems and gain an understanding of the business drivers and constraints that influence these solutions. Your communication skills will also be developed, giving you the confidence you need to interact with clients and fellow industry professionals.

Career Prospects

As Edinburgh's top university for Graduate Employability (HESA 2010) and one of the top in the UK for Graduate Prospects (The Independent and The Times University Guides for 2009), we can offer you a valuable head-start in your chosen career.
This course is fully accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and you will be eligible for Chartered Surveyor status once you have gained suitable professional experience and met the competency requirements of the RICS. As an accredited course, students have the opportunity to become students members of the RICS and access to their library and vast range of online resources.

Whilst transactions in the investment sector have reduced, there is still some £575 billion invested in UK commercial property stock and transaction volumes are starting to increase once more. These assets, as well as the large property assets owned by the public sector and owner occupiers, all require on-going strategic and active management. Typically most large scale investors/owners have teams of in-house surveyors, coupled with the use of external surveyors and advisors from the national surveying firms. Property investment is a global trend and as such there are now opportunities to work across the globe, particularly within the multinational practices.
