This Master's programme in Gender and Ethnicity, offered by one of Europe´s most advanced interdisciplinary teaching and research programmes in Women´s Studies, is aimed at students interested in Women´s Studies with a focus on the effects of gender and ethnicity.
Students will acquire profound insights into how gender and ethnicity become meaningful in their interaction with other social and historical categories. They will learn to analyse social, cultural and theoretical texts and will acquire historical and cultural knowledge about interventions against discrimination on the grounds of gender and/or ethnicity.
Attention will be given to epistemological, political and ethical aspects of theories about subjectivity and representation. Students will also acquire knowledge about the development of feminist theories, the history and current status of colonial, post-colonial and multicultural societies, and the representation of gender and ethnicity in literature, new media and new technologies.
Utrecht University´s Women´s Studies programme boasts an extensive network of teaching and research exchange programmes as well as an impressive international profile. The MA programme in Gender and Ethnicity works closely with academics and institutions both within and outside Europe and offers a challenging and stimulating academic environment as well as an internationally recognised Master´s degree.
This programme focuses on research and prepares students for postgraduate or PhD work in the field of Gender Studies.
Students may start this programme at two times during the academic year: on the 1st of September and the 1st of February. The year is divided into two semesters, running from September till January and running from February till June. A semester is divided into two course periods. Normally students will take two courses (of 7.5 ECTS each) per period.
The programme can be divided into three parts.
I. Interdisciplinary training and Introduction to the field of research (15 ECTS)
A general course, Fundamentals of the Humanities, familiarises students from all OGC Research Master's programmes with the foundations of the humanities (history of science, epistemology, methodological and social aspects of humanities research). An advanced course within the field of Gender and Ethnicity entitled 'State of the Art- Theories of Sex and Gender' covers the current state of affairs in this field, and forms a critical introduction to the multiple approaches, methods and topics currently addressed by scholars in the diverse and varied field of Gender and Ethnicity.
II. Academic specialisation (75 ECTS)
In research seminars, instructors train students to conduct independent research. Students learn to formulate research questions, locate and interpret sources, assess the significance of their own research within the framework of current debate, and report their findings. A research seminar called 'Researching Gender and Ethnicity' will allow students to grasp the breadth and depth of the interdisciplinary research in gender and ethnicity studies. Focusing on their interests and ambitions, students take up to eight research seminars or tutorials that will train them for research in a specialised topic or theme within Gender and Ethnicity Studies.
Students may choose to attend courses outside the Faculty of Humanities, either within Utrecht University, at other Dutch universities or abroad.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
