This Master's programme offers you a thorough introduction to the study of history as an academic discipline. You will focus on the social, cultural, economic and political aspects of urbanisation.
With the focus on Cities, Citizenship and Human Rights, the Utrecht history programme is anchored in the Western tradition, but it aims to systematically place these themes in a global context. The connection between state formation, urbanization and citizenship, with related themes such as the history of human rights, can be traced back to Greek antiquity. These issues, which at first glance seem to be formulated primarily in political terms, have significant social, cultural, and economic dimensions. These interconnections form an excellent starting point for a programme that offers both general and specialized training in historical research. The Research MA History is taught by experienced researchers. In recent years they have developed strong research projects on such topics as cities and citizenship in antiquity, the formation of early medieval polities, the institutional stimuli of and obstacles to economic growth, human rights, urban cultural formations and citizenship and modernity. They are therefore excellently positioned to train and lecture on these topics at an advanced level.
Contents
Students may start this two-year programme at two times during the academic year: in September and in February. The year is divided into two semesters, running from September till January and February till June. A semester is divided into two course periods. Normally students will take two courses (of 7.5 ECTS each) per period.
The programme can be divided in three sections:
A general course, Fundamentals of the Humanities (7.5 ECTS) familiarises students from all OGC Research Master's programmes with the foundations of the humanities (history of science, epistemology, methodological and social aspects of humanities research). An advanced course (7.5 ECTS) about the state of the art in historical research is a critical introduction to the multiple approaches, methods and topics currently addressed by scholars in the diverse and varied field of history.
II. Academic specialisation (75 ECTS)In research seminars (7.5 ECTS or 15 ECTS), instructors train students to conduct independent research. Students learn to formulate research questions, locate and interpret sources, assess the significance of their own research within the framework of current debate, and report their findings. In tutorials (7.5 ECTS), students select specialists with whom they wish to conduct discussions of a reading list focusing on a specific subject. Students benefit from the expertise of experienced scholars, gaining insight into clearly circumscribed research topics.
III. MA thesis (30 ECTS)You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
