Location of Utrecht University

The one-year MSc in Urban Geography programme (60 ECTS) comprises four course modules (each 7.5 ECTS), as well as a research project which may be combined with an internship.

Wide choice of internships and thesis subjects

During the first half of this Master’s programme you will take three subject-oriented modules and a module in research skills. You will spend the second half of the year on your own research, culminating in a Master’s thesis. You may select a research topic of your preference and also combine it with an internship. You will be supervised by an enthusiastic team of tutors and researchers, with wide-ranging expertise in various urban issues and a large network both in and outside the Netherlands.

‘Urban Daily Life’ and ‘Living in the City’

In this Master’s programme you can choose between two specialisations: ‘Urban Daily Life: Cultures, Consumption and Mobilities’ or ‘Living in the City: Migration, Mobility and Neighbourhoods’.
‘Urban Daily Life’ focuses on day-to-day behaviour of city dwellers and visitors, on, for instance, the behaviour of commuters and shoppers and on other leisure activities. How do these people use and perceive cities’ public spaces?
‘Living in the City’ focuses on the long-term effects that national and international migration, and moves within cities, have on the functioning of neighbourhoods and suburbs. Which population groups leave a neighbourhood, and which move back in?

English and Dutch

Since lectures are in English, students who do not speak Dutch may also enrol. Papers and examinations may be written in either English or Dutch, depending on your individual preference. Tutorials and seminars are also offered in both English and Dutch.
