This Master’s programme aims to give young scientists the opportunity to gain profound knowledge of fundamental and clinical immunology, vaccination strategies, immunotherapy in the context of cancer, the mechanisms of infectious diseases, the molecular epidemiology of infections, virulence factors of micro-organisms and resistance to therapy. Students will be required to undertake a major and a minor research project, as well as writing a Master’s thesis and giving presentations about their own work and that of others. In addition, students will follow theoretical courses and seminars, and take part in master classes given by eminent scientists.

Contents

To allow you to realise your own Master Plan, and to facilitate interdisciplinary interactions at the interfaces between scientific disciplines and programmes, the general outline of the study programme of all the Life Sciences Master’s programmes is greatly similar, if not identical. As shown below, the study programme comprises 120 ECTS credits in total.

Theoretical courses (15 ECTS)

All programmes of the Graduate School of Life Sciences involve 10 weeks devoted to theoretical courses. The theoretical component of the Immunity and Infection Master’s programme has been designed to meet the requirements of diversity in background knowledge of students in the Bachelor’s/Master’s system as well as the preferences of supervisors and students, who do not appreciate repeated disruptions of internships due to mandatory courses.

Major Research Project (51 ECTS) and Minor Research Project (33 ECTS)

As a student of the Master’s programme on Immunity and Infection, you will be required to undertake a major (51 ECTS) and a minor (33 ECTS) research project. During both projects, you may work within one of the participating groups. For your second research project you are encouraged to go abroad. Both research projects will give you practical experience in scientific research, and teach you to analyse data, write reports and give oral presentations.

Elective Component (12 ECTS)

Your elective component can be used to compensate for deficiencies in your prior education, to follow extra theoretical courses, to write an extra thesis or to extend a research project.

Master's thesis (7.5 ECTS)

Students are required to write a Master’s thesis, based on literature research on a relevant subject. The Master’s thesis should present a clear and adequate overview of recent literature addressing the issue of interest. It should have an in-depth discussion, in which the student demonstrates his/her ability to critically evaluate hypotheses and results, presents his/her own views and draws conclusions that point to new research.

Seminars (1.5 ECTS)

During the course of the Master’s programme, you should attend at least 10 seminars.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
